According to Pew Research

Young people are much more likely than older adults to use social networks.

  • 75% of online adults 18-24 have a profile on a social network site
  • 57% of online adults 25-34 have a profile on a social network
  • 30% of online adults 35-44 have one
  • 19% of online 45 to 54 year olds have a profile
  • 10% of online 55 to 64 year olds have a profile
  • 7% of online adults 65 and older have a profile

 A Nielsen study done in the second quarter of 2008 said teenagers ages 13-17 text more than any other demographic group. 1,742 per month or 58 per day. The Nielsen study, of 50,000 cell phone users nationwide, found that people use their cell phones more for texting than for talking. On average, each user sends 357 texts a month versus 204 voice calls a month.

 
Making a case to move to a content management system

Your organization already has a website and it works well for you. You use Dreamweaver or another html/css type application and your web person is responsive to making updates and adding content.  Why should you change?

A content management system (CMS) has many advantages.  How about 10 for starters.

1) Inexpensive to get started as great content management systems are available as Open Source making their acquisition and use free.  (Donations are appreciated to further platform development)

Using Facebook as a part of a webmarketing strategy is good business.  We tried just one technique on Facebook and it drove dramatic traffic to one of our clients newly minted sites.  This techique cost only the time and effort (minimal).  We use Google Analytics to track website performance and here is a snap shot of a 2 week period and the impact a bit of Facebook marketing had.

Lawson Software's CEO, Harry Debes doesn't believe in software-as-a-service(SaaS) according to ZDNet news.

"This on demand, SaaS phenomonen is something I'v lived through three times in my career now.  The first time, it was called service bureaus. The second time, it was application service proividers and now it is called SaaS." Lack of demand from customers and failed attempts by some big players have flattened his enthusiasm.  http://news.zdnet.com/2424-9595_22-218408.html 

Yet Microsoft announces an initiative for Cloud Computing followed on by the announcement of an business application suite as a deliverable.  Microsoft apparently now has 20 multinationals using its cloud offerings, including Coca-Cola and Nokia; another 3,500 companies are testing a version using shared servers.

Google's apps, clearly made for a similar space, are limited in features.  The adoption of this suite "is meager," says Dana Gardner, principal analyst at Interarbor Solutions.
